Open Dune 2
Why We Picked Open Dune 2
This is the 1992 Westwood design that most real-time strategy later borrowed from, presented here without a single modernization or apology. That means slow unit handling, deliberate build orders, and none of the quality-of-life features a modern player expects, which is either the appeal or the barrier, depending on your patience. Twenty-sixth of 31 here, and it works better as a piece of history than as a small break between other tasks.
How to Play
Three things decide whether a run here goes well:
- Build your base and units, then push outward to clear the enemy from the map.
- Keep production running while you attack, since a stalled base loses ground quickly.
- Send units in groups rather than alone, and expect slower responses than modern games.
Editor’s Note
An authentic 1992 build, so the interface and pacing will feel period-correct in ways that are not always convenient. Best approached as a museum piece rather than a quick break, with a manual open in another tab.

Dune 2 is a Westwood Studios game put together back in 1992, and it's probably best known for being the prototypical RTS, one of the first games to put together all of the elements that later led to the genre that made StarCraft and Command & Conquer so popular.
This version is authentic. It's a nice trip down memory lane, or maybe just a free introduction to a piece of PC gaming history.
